The Dust Bowl was caused by a sever drought mixed with bad farming methods. It primary effected the southern plains of America and made everyday life for the people living there extremely difficult. Wet sheets had to be hung in front of windows and doorways to prevent dust from entering homes and children had to wear dust to school to protect themselves.
The Dust Bowl helped lengthen the Great Depression as it made living a normal life even more difficult than it already was. The dust was so prevelant in the air that the sky would become dark for days at a time and the dust would fall from the sky like snow. Even houses that were sealed off ended up with inches of dust on their furniture inside their homes. It is estimated that by the end of the Dust Bowl, 850 million tons of soil was lifted off of the plains and 2.5 million people had evacuated due to the unbarable conditions.
