These "towns" called Hoovervilles were purposely called this name to show that President Hoover was directly responsible for the depression and put blame on him. Hoovervilles were started because the economic crisis caused many people to lose their jobs and left families unable to pay for housing. They had to resort to building thei own shack like structures which they lived in with their families usually only containing not much more than a small stove and beds. In many Hoovervilles, unofficial governments were created along with people elected unofficial mayors who created sets of rules for the towns. There were many tries to get rid of Hoovervilles by the real government but it was very difficult because people had nowhere ese to go and could not afford anything better. Hoovervilles housed thousands of Americans acorss the country for the entire downfall of the economy.
